An impressive medallion of Commodus from Aegeae
Lot 834
CILICIA. Aegeae. Commodus, 177-192. Medallion (Bronze, 40 mm, 27.39 g, 6 h), CY 234 = 187/8. ΑYΤ ΚΑΙ Μ ΑY ΚΟΜΜΟΔΟϹ ΑΝ Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Commodus to right; before, countermark: Nike standing left on globe, holding wreath and palm. Rev. ΚΟΜΟΔΙΑΝωΝ ΑΔΡΙΑΝωΝ ΑΙΓЄΑΙωΝ - ΔΛϹ Diademed and draped bust of Asklepios to right, with serpent before; on his head, countermark: Nike standing left on globe, holding wreath and palm. Haymann 80a. RPC IV.3 online 9754. For countermarks, Howgego 258. Very rare, apparently the fourth known example and the only one with the two countermarks. Areas of weakness from countermarking, otherwise, about very fine.

Haymann suggests that this impressive medallion may have been struck on the occasion of Commodus' decennalia. The countermarks were probably applied under Septimius Severus, perhaps in connection with his Parthian campaigns
